Prison inmates of Sabarmati jail in Ahmadabad to learn Journalism
20 prison inmates of Sabarmati central jail in Ahmedabad will learn journalism and proofreading which will help them to find a job when they come out of jail after completing their sentences.
Navjivan Trust, a publication house- founded by Mahatma Gandhi introduced a one-year diploma course in journalism and proofreading for jail inmates, which will commence from 15 October this year. This is first-time jail inmates will learn journalism in Gujarat, however, Navjivan trust is running various courses of humanities and art in Sabarmati jail.
a joint statement released by Navjivan trust and Sabarmati jail official stated that if the inmates were able to learn the task of proof-reading, they would be given the job of proof-reading by Navjivan Trust itself on the jail premises and they would be paid as per rules of the jail. Navjivan trust publishes books on Gandhian studies and philosophy in several languages.
Vivek Desai, a trustee of Navajivan Trust, told reporters that the course, which will start from October 15, would provide employment opportunities in publication field to the inmates.“We have selected 20 inmates for the course. We have made arrangements so that along with education, they also got employment,” Desai said.
The course is being started as part of the celebration of the 150th birth anniversary year of Mahatma Gandhi. He also said that the Trust has joined hands with prison authorities to launch the course. “Noted name in the field of journalism will be involved to teach the inmates.” said officials of Navjivan trust.
