Gujarat gets PM award for its initiatives & innovations in Startup
Gujarat’s initiatives and innovations in Startup sector – GoI’s priority programme in Skill Development and Entrepreneurship was adjudged winner of Prime Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Public Administration. Awards were presented today to Ms. Mamta Verma, Industries Commissioner by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on the occasion of the Civil Service Day organized in Delhi on Friday.
Prof. (Dr) Navin Sheth, Vice Chancellor of Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has congratulated Shri Vijaybhai Rupani, hon. Chief Minister, Shri Rohitbhai Patel, hon. Minister of state for industries, Ms Mamta Verma, Industries Commissioner and D. Thara, VCMD GIDC as well as their team for the achievement. He added that GTU is the pioneer to launch start-up training programmes in Gujarat. The initiatives were started by GTU team under guidance of then VC Dr. Akshai Aggarwal and Shri Hiranmay Mahanta, Director GTU Innovation Council. GTU received tremendous support from state government for this purpose. At present GTU is working as Nodal Institute (Agency) for disbursing financial assistance on behalf of state government.
The State Government aims to support 2500 Startups over a period of five years, and has created a Startup fund of USD 38 million to develop entrepreneurial skills in youth, and to create a favorable ecosystem for innovation. The Government of Gujarat has taken the bold step to announce a forward looking Startup policy, to assist Startups at all stages of development, from ideation to implementation.
The State Government has a vision of developing Gujarat as a vibrant and successful startup hub, which lays the foundation of modern economic development, driven by innovative enterprises. The ultimate objective is to create umpteen entrepreneurship and job creation opportunities for the people of Gujarat. The State is already home to over 110 startup firms and incubation centres. Moreover, Ahmedabad has been classified as an “Emerging City” for Startups by NASSCOM in 2015.
Government of Gujarat has approved about Rs. 55 lakh to 9 innovative startup projects. First installment of the help was given of Rs. 16 lakh and after review second installment of Rs. 13 lakh was disbursed bu GTU. Now GTU has received 30 fresh application for financial assistance. Shortly screening committee will plan viva for the new applications. After selection, the applications will be submitted to industry ministry. State level committee will review the applications and then decision to provide financial assistance will be taken.
